Toxin produced by Corynehacterium diphtheriae which induces severe damage in a body of infected person. Toxin has unique structure, which allows it to recognize and attach to the surface of susceptible cells and to disturb protein synthesis inside them. It can be neutralized by antitoxin, which is normally used in treatment of severe infections in unimmunized persons.
