What is DUAL-TONE MULTI-FREQUENCY?

The system of signalling embodied in telephones with a numeric keypad. Each row and column of the pad is associated with a different audio frequency. Pressing a key causes the pair of tones corresponding to the row and column intersecting at that key to be sent over the line. Cf loop-disconnect pulsing. See multifrequency, Touch-Tone.
