A branch of microwave spectroscopy in which there is resonant absorption of radiation by a paramagnetic substance, possessing unpaired electrons, when the energy levels are split by the application of a strong magnetic field. The difference in energy levels is modified by the environment of the atoms. Information on impurity centres in crystals, the nature of the chemical bond and the effect of radiation damage can be found. Also electron paramagnetic resonance. Abbrev ESR.
