Fission by fast neutrons. Uranium-238 has a fission threshold for neutrons of energy about 1 MeV, and the fission cross-section increases rapidly with energy. Fission of this isotope by fast neutrons may cause a substantial increase in the reactivity of a thermal reactor fast effect. See panel on
