The influence which, when acting on a body which is free to move, produces an acceleration in the motion of the body, measured by rate of change of momentum of body. Extended to denote loosely any operating agency. Electromotive force, magnetomotive force and magnetizing force are stricdy misnomers. The unit of force is that which produces unit acceleration in unit mass. See newton, dyne, poundal.
