What is LAKE?

A body of water lying on the surface of a continent, and unconnected except indirecdy by rivers with the ocean. Lakes may be freshwater lakes, provided with an outlet to the sea: or salt lakes, occurring in the lowest parts of basins of inland drainage, with no connection with the sea. Lakes act as natural settling tanks, in which sediment carried down by rivers is deposited, containing the shells of molluscs etc. The lakes of former geological periods may thus be recognized by the nature of the sediments deposited in them and the fossils they contain. Lakes occur plentifully in glaciated areas, occupying hollows scooped out by the ice, and depressions lying behind barriers of morainic material,
