What is LANTHANIDE CONTRACTION?

The peculiar characteristic of the lanthanide series that the ionic radius decreases as the atomic number increases, because of the increasing pull of the nuclear charge on the unchanging number of electrons in the two outer shells. Thus the elements after lanthanum, eg platinum, are very dense and have chemical properties very similar to their higher homologues, eg palladium.
