A primary cell, good for intermittent use, which has a positive electrode of carbon surrounded by a mixture of manganese dioxide and powdered carbon in a porous pot. The pot and the negative zinc electrode stand in a jar containing ammonium chloride solution. The emf is approximately 1 -4 volt. The dry cell is a particular form of Leclanche.
