What is MYOGLOBIN?

A haem protein related to haemoglobin but consisting of only one polypeptide chain. It is present in large amounts in the muscles of mammals such as whales and seals, where it acts as an oxygen store during diving. It was the first protein to have its three-dimensional structure worked out.
