The somatic antigen of Gram-negative bacteria, eg genera Escherichia, Shigella, Salmonella etc. Species specific cell wall antigen with an outer side chain of repeating units of oligosaccharides which confers strain specificity. The polysaccharide is internally linked to lipid A forming lipopolysaccharide.
