The culture of explants, ie cells, tissues or organs from plants, under aseptic conditions in or on a sterile growth medium typically containing sugars, as an energy and carbon source, mineral salts and growth substances, sometimes solidified with eg agar. Cells in an explant will grow and divide indefinitely in an appropriate medium.
