A group of individuals that 1 actually or potentially interbreed with each other but not with other such groups, 2 show continuous morphological variation within the group but which is distinct from other such groups. Taxonomically, species are grouped into genera and divided into subspecies and varieties or, horticulturally, into cultivars. In the system of binomial nomenclature of plants and animals, the second name ie the name by which the species is distinguished from other species of the same genus is termed the specific epithet or specific name. The latter, however, correctly refers to the full name, eg Lilium candidum Madonna Lily, where candidum is the specific epithet.
