What is STRANDED CAISSON?

A watertight box, having a solid floor, which is floated over the site where a bridge pier is to be constructed. Construction goes on in the dry on the floor of the box, which sinks finally to a previously levelled bed under water, the sides of the box being kept always above water. Also American caisson.
