Estimate of the stiffness of any material from atomic/molecular data. For example it can be done for completely oriented polymer chains from a knowledge of chain structure, bond lengths and angles, and force constants. For high-density polyethylene, calculation gives a theoretical tensile modulus along the chains of 31 GPa and about 9 GPa perpendicular to the chains.
