The use of cooling or heating curves in the study of physical changes in materials. The freezing points and the temperatures of any polymorphic changes occurring in pure materials may be determined, as well as ranges and temperatures for changes in solid alloys. The data obtained are used eg in constructing phase diagrams. See differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analysis
