What is TIDE?

The distortion of the surface layers whether liquid or solid of a planet or natural satellite resulting from differences between the gravitational forces acting on its various parts. The most familiar is the ocean tide on the Earth, produced mainly by the attraction of the Moon. As well as a bulge of water directed towards the Moon, there is a bulge on the opposite side of the Earth because the gravitational force there is less than that acting on the solid sphere of the Earth
