What is VARIABLE REGION?

The N-terminal half of light chains VL and the N-terminal half of the Fab portion of the heavy chains VH of immunoglobulin molecules. The amino acid sequences in these regions are variable within a single immunoglobulin class and light chain type. This variability is controlled by the immunoglobulin genes. Similarly the N-terminal region of the a, ft and y chains of the T-lympho- cyte antigen receptors have variable regions, controlled in a similar manner,
