What is MODE-LOCKING?

A technique for producing laser pulses of extremely short duration. Laser cavities have modes with frequency spacing c/2L where c is the speed of light and L is the length of the cavity. Oscillations can occur in any mode as long as its frequency is within the natural line width of the laser transition. If a property of the cavity is modulated at a frequency of c/2L, then all the modes become co
