A measure of quality for a communications element, indicating the degradation in signal-to-noise ratio that it introduces. It is given by the input signal-to-noise ratio divided by the output signal-to- noise ratio, or the difference between these quantities when working in decibels. An ideal element has a ratio of unity, or 0 dB.
