Techniques which permit high range resolution for which short pulses are necessary while transmitting relatively long pulses in order to increase transmitter power and thereby enhance detection capability. Commonly, the pulse is frequency- or phase- modulated; modulation information is fed to the pulse- compression circuits in the receiver so that a matched-filter effect allows the receiver to respond only to echoes bearing the same modulation. See coding.
