A disease characterized by alternating febrile and afebrile periods, splenomegaly, transient painful swelling of joints, neuralgia and anaemia; due to infection with Brucella melitensis, conveyed to man by infected goats or their milk. 2 A disease with the same signs as 1, due to infection by Brucella abortus, a micro-organism which causes abortion in cows and is conveyed to man in cow's milk or by contact with infected animals.
